Luckenbach Texas

Luckenbach Texas
28 Miles; 41 minutes
Click Here for Google Maps Route

“Let’s go to Luckenbach Texas” the infamous line sung by Waylon Jennings.  A real town with an interesting past.  Originally founded by Hondo Crouch and still owned by his family, Luckenbach is THE gathering place for country music, guitar pickin’, dancing, longneck beer, bikers and babes. “Big-Name” entertainers are frequently booked.  Willie may be found pickin on his guitar un-announced.

The General Store and Bar are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Everything else is open 24/7.

A fifteen minute drive from Fredericksburg on some beautiful country roads.

Hondo’s Restaurant on W Main St in Fredericksburg is operated by the Luckenbach family and it too features some great country music.

Willow City Loop

Willow City Loop
52 Miles; 1:16 minutes
Click Here for Google Maps Route

Willow City Loop is a quiet drive about 20 miles north of Fredericksburg.  The loop takes you alongside towering cliffs, over low-water crossings, past grazing livestock and an abundance of native wildlife.  During the springtime, thousands of visitors come to see the wildflowers that abound on the loop.  There are many places to stop and take photographs of the scenery (you might think you’re in Colorado).  Bring a picnic lunch and stop at the stream crossings along the loop or stop at the Pecan Grove Store on Hwy 16 on the ride back to Fredericksburg.

The route given takes you in the back way via some country roads, past Harry’s On the Loop”, then on to the loop and brings you back by way of Hwy 16.

Enchanted Rock State Park

Enchanted Rock State Park
44 Miles; 1:02 minutes
Click Here for Google Maps Route

Enchanted Rock is one of three granite monoliths on the planet.  The other two are Ayers Rock in Australia and Stone Mountain in Georgia.  “E-rock” rises 1875 feet above sea level and takes about 1-1½ hours to hike from the parking lot to the top.  Bring plenty of water, good hiking shoes and your camera.

The State Park fills early and typically by 10:00 am a line forms outside the park and it then becomes one car out – one car in.

James Avery Jewelry & Museum

James Avery Jewelry & Museum
56 Miles; 1:10 minutes
Click Here for Google Maps Route

In nearby Kerrville, the James Avery Jewelry headquarters and museum is an unexpected treat for visitors.

Stroll around the corporate grounds, shop in their store and be sure to visit the museum.  It tells the story of an amazing American Craftsman who began the business in his garage.  James passed away last year, and the business is now led by his two sons.

The National Museum of the Pacific War

The National Museum of the Pacific War
Within Walking Distance of the Host Hotel

On the battlefield and on the home front, ordinary Americans took up the challenge to turn back the greatest threat to freedom and democracy of the 20th century. Their achievement is the story of the National Museum of the Pacific War told through artifacts, advanced media, custom animations and stunning film and photography of the day. The complex, located in downtown Fredericksburg, includes three museums with 45,000 square feet of exhibit space and lessons that will last a lifetime.

Admiral Chester Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg in a tiny home just across the street from today’s museum.  Over 55,000 square feet of exhibits on six acres of land is the only U.S. museum solely dedicated to the story of WWII in the Pacific theater.  Open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, tickets are good for two days, as it will take at least that long to tour all of the exhibits. This museum is a very popular international destination.  www.pacificwarmuseum.org

The museum is within walking distance of our host hotel, the Inn on Barons Creek (two blocks).  The Admiral Nimitz Gallery is on the corner of Main St and Washington St in downtown Fredericksburg.  The George H.W. Bush Gallery is immediately behind the former and the Pacific Combat Zone is one block to the northeast.  Aside from finding parking on the streets of town, your best bet would be to park at our host hotel and walk.

Although the Admiral Nimitz is closed for renovations until in early 2020, the Admiral Nimitz Gallery will still invite visitors to explore the life and career of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz though interactive, multi-media exhibits together with artifacts from his life and career. And other areas of the complex are still open as well.
